![]() ![]() ![]() Daughter Frances Bean Cobain, now 22, is the executive producer. ![]() The film takes its title - and, really, its structure - from a piece of extraordinary source material, one of hundreds of cassette tapes Cobain made that had been secreted away for years with other artifacts of his life by his family, who authorized the film. By continuing with the film after toddler Kurt waves goodbye, Morgen prevents us from reaching too quickly for neatly packaged conclusions. The genius of the “Montage” is that Morgen eschews not only predictability, but also the pretext of trying to give definitive answers when the more rewarding path to understanding Cobain’s life and career is through questions. Morgen doesn’t, and that’s why “Montage of Heck,” airing Monday on HBO after a limited theatrical release, is shattering, unpredictable and tells you more about Cobain than any previous film. A lesser filmmaker might have gone for the obvious here and used the scene to end the film in a hackneyed way. ![]()
